Native Americans didn't always have bows and arrows. It wasn't until 500 AD that bows and arrows were adopted in Iowa, about 11,500 years after the first people arrived in the region. The main advantages of bows and arrows over spears are faster reaction times, greater accuracy, and greater mobility.

Arrowheads also required significantly fewer raw materials than spearheads. A flint cutter (flint maker) could produce a large number of small projectile points from a single piece. Bows and arrows are relative, so the hunter had a better chance of bringing down his prey.

Native Americans used arrows to hunt animals, even large ones like bison and elk. Hunters approached their prey on foot or on horseback, aiming precisely at the right area. The choice of materials and the design of the arrows and bows were not random. Some materials were generally more readily available than others. Environmental conditions also influenced the choice of materials.

Humidity and temperature influenced bows and arrows. Bows used on horseback are generally shorter. Since the length determines the strain on the bow when drawn, shorter bows are usually made of composite materials, while long bows are made of wood.

Native Americans used a variety of materials to stabilize the bow. The materials had to meet certain requirements, the most important of which was flexibility without breakage. Several plant species and some animal materials met these requirements. Ash, hickory, locust, Osage orange, cedar, juniper, oak, walnut, birch, choke cherry, serviceberry, and mulberry were used.

Where available, elk antler, mountain sheep horn, bison horn and ribs, and caribou antler were also used. Bowmaking techniques included a single wooden stave (self-made bow), wood with sinew reinforcement (back bow), and a combination of horn or antler with sinew backing (composite bow). Hide glue was used to attach the backing. Bowstrings were most commonly made of sinew (animal back or leg sinew), rawhide, or gut. The Dakota Indians also used cords made from the neck of snapping turtles.

Plant fibers such as linden, elm, cherry, and yucca bark were occasionally used. Nettle, milkweed, and dogbane are also suitable fibers. Well-crafted plant fiber tendons are superior to animal fiber strings because they can support a lot of weight, do not stretch, and remain durable even in humid conditions. However, plant fiber tendons are much more labor-intensive to produce than animal fiber warps. Later, tendons made of gut or rawhide became preferred.

Arrow shafts were made from shoots such as dogwood, wild rose, ash, birch, chokecherry, and black locust. Reeds were also used relatively widely throughout North America. The shoots were cut, sanded, or straightened under heat and pressure. Tools made of bone or sandstone were used to straighten the shaft wood. Because they are hollow and lightweight, reed arrows usually have a wooden foreshaft and sometimes a wooden plug for the nock end of the arrow. Historical tips were made of stone, antler, or bone.

The points were attached to the arrow shaft using various methods. Most commonly, the arrow shaft had a slot cut into the end to accommodate the point. Points were also glued directly by wrapping sinew around the point and the arrow shaft. Metal points were generally attached using the same techniques and were rarely secured with a bushing.

Native Americans made many types of arrowheads. Carved wooden or leather arrowheads, along with the traditional triangular stone arrowhead, had large, broad surfaces. Small triangular stone arrowheads were used for larger animals, while blunt, larger arrowheads were used for birds. There were also harpoon-like arrowheads (some with barbs) that were used for fishing.

Bird feathers were tied to the shaft or sometimes inserted into it. Wild turkey feathers were preferred. But many other feathers, such as eagle, crow, goose, and hawk, were often used. Sinew was generally used to attach the fletching. Sometimes vegetable thread was used to "stitch" the feather. Hide glue was used with or instead of sinew tape. Animal products such as sinew have the advantage of becoming stronger when dried.

The fletching balances the weight of the arrowhead. Proper fletching allows the arrow to rotate in flight, creating an ideal trajectory. Similar effectiveness is achieved by inserting grooves into the barrel of a rifle to allow the bullet to spin optimally. Until the invention of rifles, bows generally proved more accurate and could launch arrows farther than powder-fired projectiles. Even then, the bow and arrow were a complex technology. Each element must work in proportion to the other to produce an effective tool. When the string is drawn, the material on the inside, or belly, of the bow limbs is compressed, while the outside, or spine, is stretched and placed under tension. This action stores the energy used to draw back the string. When the string is released, the limbs quickly return to their resting state, releasing the energy stored by the draw. Therefore, the power of a bow is still measured today as draw weight.

The archer's size and strength determine the ideal draw weight of the bow. A combination of draw length and draw weight determines the throw (propulsive force) of the bow. By adjusting one or both of these functions, the arrowhead can be made larger or smaller as needed. The bow's draw weight also determines the ideal weight and diameter of the arrow shaft. If the arrow is too heavy, it won't fly far or fast enough to be effective. An arrow that is too thick or too thin will also cause problems. It must be manufactured to bend around the bow when released from the string.

The length of the draw, which is also determined by the archer's body, determines the length of the arrow. This tells us that certain "arrowheads" can't really be used for an arrow, at least not with good success. A general rule of thumb is that a stone arrowhead is less than 1 1/2 x 3/4 inches and generally weighs less than an ounce. Finds of larger "arrowheads" were probably spear, arrow, or knife points.
