The petrel feather in self-test

The petrel feather in self-test - Bogensportinfo
Manfred Hanus

Thomas Brugger | Bogen Sport Extrem/Extreme Archery is known as the man who shoots extremely "heavy" bows. But... he can also do other things. He has developed his own feather shape, the Storm Petrel Feather.

And we tested them.

They finally arrived – the new springs. The Sturmvogel spring in the SV-2 RW version. Heard so much about it, then heard it presented in an interview with the aforementioned "inventor" – the excitement was mounting.

The first sweet surprise: there were sweets in the package!!! 🤩 Yes, I like that.

Back to the topic. Finally holding the feathers in my hands, one thing immediately stands out. The consistency and workmanship are truly top-notch – right down to the quill. Nothing is bent or twisted. The gluing itself was absolutely problem-free. These are fine parts.

The lady of the house then wrapped the new sticks (TOP as always) and off we went.

Of course, the "newbies" are tested at the home base in Pottenbrunn. First, a target at about 12 meters, and then off to the course—you want to see these things in action. Compared to my previous favorite feather (Shield 3.5-4, depending on the bow), the arrows fly extremely stable and... surprisingly straight. Surprising, given the wind that day.

I'm still not entirely sure about the tip selection. Currently, I have 85g on the arrow, but I've been testing 60g tips alongside the new feather. There are no results yet... or maybe there are: about 50/50... to be continued 😉

What hasn't been tested yet is the highly praised performance of the spring in wet conditions. That will be an addendum. As soon as it stops snowing here, I'll try THAT out, too.

The spring is available in these versions

SV1: 60 mm length / 12 mm height

SV2: 80 mm length / 12 mm height

SV-Hunter: 100 mm length / 15 mm height

The differences here lie in the stabilization time. The SV1 shape is particularly suitable for experienced archers with a clean release technique and impresses with its high arrow speed.

The SV2 shape stabilizes the arrow more quickly and forgives the occasional release error.

The SV-Hunter stabilizes the arrow the fastest because it was developed based on a 4-inch feather and is ideal for 3D archery at tournament distances.

The petrel feather is right-wound!

Addendum

Lots of snow = wet feathers. Now the time had come for the feathers to finally get wet 😆.

They were wonderful to shoot. They held their line and, above all, their form. Tom didn't overpromise here.

The saying "A picture is worth a thousand words!" is true here. It should be added that we're not talking about a downpour here, but "just" wet feathers.
