A test to determine the exact spine value of an arrow. The arrows are shot at a target from various distances without fletching, and the angle of impact is evaluated.
In the previously mentioned raw shaft test, the arrow shaft is adjusted to the bow without any fletching.
The fletching is omitted because it stabilizes the arrow in flight and thus "hides" small defects in the spine – but arrow shafts that are well matched to the bow fly straight even without feathers at a distance of about 20 m.
Shafts that do not fly straight may also have an incorrect center of gravity: This must be in front of the center.
If the shaft moves vertically, the nocking point is incorrectly set and the shaft is innocent.
A consistent firing sequence is important when testing the stock; release errors become very visible without springs and are then difficult to distinguish from incorrect spine.
