Bandulan Target

Bandulan Target - Bogensportinfo

Historical background

The history of Jemparigan dates back well before the 17th century. Between 1755 and 1792, Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono I, the first king of Yogyakarta, encouraged his followers to learn archery to develop the character of a knight. The character of a knight is defined by the four values decreed by Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono I to be used by the people of Yogyakarta: sawiji, greget, sengguh, and ora mingkuh.

“Sawiji” means concentration, “Greget” means enthusiasm, “Sengguh” means trust and “Ora Mingkuh” means responsibility.

The target is called the "Bandulan," the lower part, known as the Awak (body), is painted white, and the upper part is called the "Sirah" (head). The yellow ring between the head and body is called the "Leher" (neck).

Originally, this game was only performed in the Kingdom of Mataram and became a race among government soldiers. But over time, the art of archery has become increasingly popular and is played by many ordinary people.

Jemparingan differs from other archery, which focuses on the archer's ability to properly focus on the target. Archery is typically performed standing up, while jemparingan is performed cross-legged.

The archer does not aim with his eyes, but positions the bow in front of his stomach so that the shot is directed according to the archer's feeling.
